It's hard to let a friend go like that, I've had to put down two of mine just 3 months apart, several years ago. Be comforted in the fact that Toots had your family with the love to take her in and make her comfortable and loved. I now have my Mom's(she is deceased) old cat, he is such a love and he is near his end as well, the last connection I have to my Mom.
So when the time comes to give him release it will hurt like heck, but it is better than prolonging the inevitable.
