The young soldier received a direct command on what to do to the prisoner, yet he hesitated. There was something about the broken tortured man that made him feel that to inflict more pain just wasn’t right.
He silently lamented that he had been deployed to the Middle East and that he had drawn this particular assignment. Had he not needed a job he would have never enlisted. Still, at times he was proud to be part of the greatest military force in the world.
His NCO again barked out the order and still he held back. Educated and being from a good but financial strapped family, he had been raised to think and feel but think and feel too much for a common soldier.
Then the sweat soaked Sergeant, between strings of curses said, “what do you think these bastards do when they catch our boys out in the desert? Remember the two from our company who were captured last September!”
The young soldier then averted his gaze from the sorrowful eyes of the bloodied captive and began carrying out his orders by pounding the spikes into the man’s arms and legs.
It was a rare Roman who did not consider serving in Jerusalem an extreme hardship.
